Crafts: Bird Nest

Posted on

Truth: I saw a necklace like this about four years ago. Back before the days of Pinterest. Before the days of blogging.

Well okay, there were probably blogs then, but I didn’t have one, and I didn’t even read them yet.

When I was in graduate school, I mentored an undergraduate doing research in a similar field at the same sites I was collecting data. Her and I were big bird nerds together. When I saw a picture on etsy of a bird nest necklace made of wire and beads and showed her, she was all over it.

I didn’t make one then, but I never really forgot about the necklace and how easy it was for her to make it. She whipped that necklace up in only a few minutes, after buying all the materials she needed in a single Walmart shopping trip.

[We lived in a small town - Walmart was the only option, just so you know. Not that I actively avoid Walmart, I just don't seek it out. Especially for crafts. But this is getting off topic.]

Fast forward to last fall. Enter Pinterest.

I saw the necklace again and pinned it, thinking I’d make one really quick-like. (I think we know where this is going, don’t we?)

Fast forward a little more and I found a tutorial for the necklace. Not that I needed a tutorial to make it, but I started to think that the universe was conspiring to get me to make this necklace.

Still, I didn’t make it.

This is not mine. I stole this picture from the tutorial for making the necklace. She’s a much better crafter than me.

Fast forward again to a couple weeks before Christmas. I was still waiting for inspiration to strike to figure out the second part of my best friends’ present. Clearly, when looking for inspiration, one looks to Pinterest. Right?

So finally, years after initially seeing this necklace, I made one.

And then I made another. One for her and one for me.

It’s kind of like those super cool best friend necklaces that you used to have in the 80s.

Admit it. You had a couple one. The hearts that were broken in half? And then you got into a fight with your best friend (it being middle school and all) and you threw it out or stopped wearing it?

You did. You so bought it at Claire’s Boutique at the mall too.

No? Just me? Figures.

But anyway, this necklace isn’t that one. It’s much cooler. Obviously.

Have you ever put off making something forever and when you finally made it, it was incredibly easy?

Anyone else have fickle middle school friendships?

Have you ever put off making something forever and when you finally made it, it was incredibly easy? = yes, all the time.

  2. That is exactly what happened! (at least twice) :) Bought it from Claire’s, gave it to her, and then after a couple of weeks I had two and no best friend… Mine looked like a broken St. Christopher medallion in a heart shape.

These are so cool! I want to make one too!! (That’s often what happens is that I make something and I think “wow- and I thought that was going to take a lot longer.” Either that or you get the opposite and it sits in the to do pile for quite a while…

  3. Yes, so much so that I have so many half-started or nearly-started projects in my hobby room (aka knitting, scrapbooking, anything else room). I may just dig them out this year and get ‘er dun! Part of my bucket list, me thinks.

Many fickle middle school friendships. Although I do have a friend who I’m still in touch with (occasionally) from when we were under 5 years old. How many people can say that? When we get together, it’s like our friendship never ended. You may recall who I’m talking about. She and I used to go for daily walks back when we lived on Schaefer St. Do you remember?

  4. I had two sets of the BF necklaces. I threw one out when I found a notebook circulating among two other friends essentially shit-talking me. Lovely. And you KNOW I love this necklace. Birds FTW!

  7. I’m not even sure how many different “friends forever” necklaces I had (from Claire’s or occasionally AfterThoughts if we were feeling lavish). I am 99.9% sure I don’t have one now, and 100% sure that I don’t remember who I had shared them with at the time … turns out forever doesn’t last so long when you’re 12. BFF bird nest necklaces are something I could get behind, though! Yours look great!
