I have never liked egg nog. It’s a texture thing.
The sweetness with the milkiness (milk has made me want to upchuck since I was in 6th grade….anything that tastes slightly “milky”…ew) with the egginess; it was all just too much for me.
But I’ve always wanted to like egg nog.

The booziness, the festivity-ness, the booziness; it just sounds so fun! Not to mention that everyone else seems to love it, so why can’t my freaky taste buds get with the program already?
Without even knowing this about me and with no prodding from me, my friend Missy told me to try her version of homemade, sugar-free, dairy -free egg nog. (Hush all of you egg nog purists. This is my blog and I’ll bastardize whatever recipes I want.)
Of course, the very next day, I had to make it first thing in the morning. To add to my coffee, naturally.
‘Tis the season, after all.
I just threw a few things into my blender, whirled a bit and called it good. And then I pounded a cup down and made another one. To add to my coffee, naturally. (For real this time.)
I didn’t measure, but it was about 1 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup egg beaters (you could do yolks if your name is Rocky Balboa and/or you aren’t afraid of raw yolks), stevia (or your favorite sweetener), nutmeg, rum extract, and some kind of thickener. I used this stuff because it thickens without needing to be heated) but you could use instant pudding mix too.

Sure, there are a billion nogs on grocery store shelves around the holidays. But I’ve yet to try one that I liked and this homemade version was perfect! Not too milky or eggy or….weird.
Now, here’s the co-ink-ee-dink part – that same day, my mom called and was very excited to tell me all about the Soy Nog she’d just bought at the store. This was quite likely the first and only time we’d ever spoken about egg nog on the phone and it was the same day I drank the first nog I liked in my entire life.
Stars were aligning, people.

Unfortunately, I think I may have bursted her bubble when I responded, less than enthusiastically, that I don’t really like soy milk AND that I had just a few hours prior made my very own egg nog.
Promises to make her some over Thanksgiving were made.
This nog tastes great in coffee, on its own, and spiked with a wee bit of whiskey. What’s that? It’s supposed to be rum, you say?
Pshaw.
What’s your take on egg nog? Soy nog? Coconut milk nog? Hemp nog? I have no idea if they make all these non-dairy versions, but my guess is that they soon will if they don’t now.

I buy the EggNog coffeemate. That way I can combine eggnog + coffee. The best of all worlds!
As a kid, I loved eggnog, but now it’s too heavy and rich for me. After one sip I’ve had enough. I’d rather eat more of my mom’s homemade treats and such, with a glass of wine.
My brother could probably drink a gallon of egg nog in one sitting. I am not a fan. It’s just way too thick and all I can think about when I see it is that it’s eggs. I’d rather have mine scrambled!
i LOVE the taste of egg nog but have to do coconut or rice nog (i try to avoid soy) and obviously cannot handle cow dairy..hai gas. OMG i love that pug photo..did i tell you that we are thinking of getting a pug in 2013? I have contacted a breeder and am waiting for a litter
A few things:
YOUR ANKLE!! That was awful. I feel for you girl. You must be strong as crap not to be a cry baby. BUT lol at the mental capture of your toe discovery whilst it happenned. I could legit imagine you on your couch ..”Wait….wait a minute…huh? Wow! I never noticed that!” lol.
That is the type of thing that would happen to me. and then we blog about it!!
Also –enoki mushrooms!!! Ooodles of shroom-oodles!
I am so glad you got your nog on…yours sounds better than mine (naturally, more fancy and thicker).
I get nervous when I share my food thangs because they get weird.
That’s why we get along so well.
Speaking of. OMG. You didn’t tell me the bacon salt was vegetarian in your text.
Dang you, woman! I’m on a food budget! I am down to the last of my salt and vinegar shake,
I’m already going through withdrawal from my lack of Everything Bagel Spice and have been MEANING to make my own but…#theresathemehere

Seasonings are pricey (and so worth it).
Egg nog is vile, enough said.
I can’t say I’ve ever had egg nog. It just *looks* like I wouldn’t like it! Yes, I should try it and find out for sure. Yes, I guess I could make my own. Yes, the coconut milk nog cartons at the grocery store look so festive and inviting. OK, I’ll buy one. Stop pressuring me!
LOVE eggnog, but it has to be homemade….HATE the storebought stuff
Those pictures are too awesome. He looks just like my Nigel and acts like him too. Seriously he fell in my mom’s pond twice while we were in IN. Oh and you referenced my favorite movie EVER! Anytime I think of drinking raw eggs (which admittedly isn’t very often) I think of Rock. I’ve only ever had store bought eggnog and love it.
