Maybe my blog should be called Books and Crafts

Posted on

I have been making cookies, I swear. Weekly for the most part. The problem is that by the time I think to take a picture of them, either 1) I have eaten them all or 2) its dark out. Pictures of food under fluorescent light suck, just straight up.

In fact, just the other day, I made a batch of these Orange Dreamsicle Cookies. I tweaked the recipe just a little, and obviously didn’t take any pictures. But they look a lot like the ones that are pictured in the original recipe post. They tasted better though.

So yeah. I’m lazy, if you must know the truth.

But books, I don’t have to take pictures of and I can talk about until the cows come home. Not that I have cows. Or a place to put them should they come home.

I guess that’s a stupid and irrelevant cliche then, huh?

Moving on….I finished another book this past weekend, earning myself another notch in the old YA dystopian trilogy belt.

Read my review of it here.

I was a home-bound slug for most of the weekend. It was cold, blustery, and snowy outside, yet warm and cozy inside, so guess where I was? Yep.

Plus, I got a shipment of yarn on Friday so I obviously had to drop everything to start my latest crochet project. I’m making a blanket! I’m going to make this Ripple Blanket, using really bright yarn. The hope is that it is done by Christmas. Fingers crossed.

I also harvested, finally, the mushrooms I started way back in October.

For the money, they probably aren’t the best deal ever, but the scientist and the foodie in me loved the entire process, from watching it all start from a bag of mixed sawdust and coffee grounds, to the nasty white moldy stage, to the fruiting, to the misting, to the EATING.

Not to mention I’ve never seen these mushrooms at a store around here, so making them myself is integral to actually being able to eat them.

I also did my monthly peanut butter/sunflower seed butter making on Saturday. I try to make a new flavor every time and this time I went savory. And Asian.

For those nay-sayers reading, and I can hear you from here, have you ever had peanut sauce? Come on then.

Kimchi peanut butter. I wish I’d made a bigger jar.

Even though my beloved boys didn’t win the game yesterday (I’m still bitter, it’s best to not bring this up with me), I discovered a new tv show that will fill up that empty space in my heart quite nicely.

How did I not know there was a tv show about nerdy scientists with PhDs?!? And it has been on for 6 years?! I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

Happy Monday! What do you have planned for the week? My schedule is pretty booked already, but I don’t teach on Tuesdays, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t planning on working from home all day tomorrow in my pjs. I can’t wait.

  1. How do your mushrooms taste? It is so exciting to taste things that you grew. :) ..and I really like the savory nut butter idea…Kinda like that crazy sandwich we talked about!
This is my first full week back to school and I feel like I jumped into the deep end head first if you know what I mean! I’m glad to be back though…enjoy your Tuesday work from home day!

  4. interesting about the ‘shrooms. i actually thought about buying a kit but now i think i will save my pennies. i should have shared with you about BBT! you should stream a show called ‘peep show’ it’s a british comedy and has nothing to do with the title except that the narration is filmed through the eyes of the person speaking. it’s hilarious and amazing! i have a lot on tap this week! going to see some homes (i am house shopping!), les mis in the theatre, a hockey party, morrissey concert and a dinner at a raw vegan place yum!

  5. I am appalled you didn’t know about that show! DON’T YOU LOVE IT?! Oh my gosh, it’s so funny and SO FUNNY too! Katie, I just read a YA from start to finish yesterday and then tried to read a factual historical thing this morning and it was awful. I need a transition book. Did you ever read Blankets btw?
