For your mid-week reading pleasure

Posted on

It’s Wednesday. In the past two weeks, I’ve presented you with a post a week with what I’ve been reading. I’ve been calling them something along the lines of “Wednesday reads” or something to that effect, yet I’ve not yet posted them on an actual Wednesday.

Today, Wednesday, I present to you…Things I’ve Been Reading on the Internets and Beyond Since the Last Time I Presented This Kind of a List.

[Yes, I realize that is an incredibly long name for a list. But all those words are completely necessary. Trust me.]

1. Ants Being Awesome

The article title sums it up quite nicely, but they also link to the photographer/designer’s website which has even more pictures of ants being even more awesome.

It’s…awesome. (For lack of a better word. Hehehe.)

2. 30 Things Every Woman should Have and Know by the time she’s 30

201204242231.jpg

I am (well) into my 30s and can say that I have and/or know most of, but certainly not all of the items on this list. I won’t say which (this is a public blog and my dad reads it, guys!), but whether you are under 30, just turned 30, or are going on your 30th consecutive 30th birthday, it’s worth the read.

Apparently, the list was originally published in Glamour in 1995 and then became an email chain letter phenomenon (back before the age of internet memes, though honestly, I’m still not sure what a meme is or if I used it correctly just now).

Reprinted in the magazine in 2005, it is now a book.

While I am all for the concept of this book, I feel I’d be remiss if I didn’t comment on the fact that Lauren Conrad and Taylor Swift are considered “notable women” on par with Maya Angelou?!

Oh right. This is by the editors of Glamour magazine. It all makes sense now.

3. This article. Is. Gross.12 Foods with more than 25 ingredients.

Not that it is a surprise, but the Big Mac sauce ALONE has more than 25 ingredients. So do Pringles and Lunchables and 9 other things I’ve probably eaten and am mildly disgusted by.

Sometimes I love the Huffington Post, other times I really hate it.

Dear HuffPo editors, Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. Love, Katie

4. For all of you non-readers, I’ve even got a video.

I know that doesn’t count as reading at all, but it’s my blog and I make the rules around here.

My rule: awesomeness is always allowed, encouraged, and welcome.

5. The Dating Website Where Rich People Take Pretty People on Fancy Vacations, Which Is 100% Definitely Not Prostitutey at All

I love me some Jezebel, but they get mad props for article title length and bonus points for the use of the word “prostitutey”. The content of the article is pretty great, too.

It was so unreal, I had to go to the website to make sure the article was legit. It’s a for real thing, y’all. I took that screenshot above myself!!

6. My bookshelf is always out of control, and this week is no different.

Currently reading: Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver and Let’s Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess)

On deck: Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul and Legend by Marie Lu. Both from the library.

And….wow. That is the most, um, eclectic mix of books ever put together.

That sums me up quite nicely though, doesn’t it?

Your turn. What are you reading? Even if you say you aren’t a reader, I bet you are reading something on the internet. What is it?

Are you surprised by any of the 12 foods? The not-prostitutey “dating” website?

Aren’t ants the awesomest?!?!

What I was reading on Wednesday

Posted on

[Because Thursday didn't have the same ring.]

I’ve decided to do a new little weekly featurette here. Because I read a lot of little interesting (some not so much interesting) nuggets on the internet and I don’t really have an appropriate outlet to share them.

I could share them on Facebook, but sometimes when people do that I get annoyed. Don’t ask me why. I just do. Especially if it is political. Boy howdy, I get annoyed with the political facebook postings.

Firstly, let me tell you about my latest iphone app discovery: Read It Later.

It is an app you install in your web browser and it syncs with your phone so that you can read any website on your phone, even if you don’t have an internet connection. It’s great – no ads, no connecting, and you hit a little checkbox when you finish reading, and voila! It’s gone. From the phone, from the computer, from your brain (if you so desire.)

You can also categorize (I think they call it “tagging”, but I’m not that cool yet) articles that you don’t want to delete. And they all include the link to the original website.

Pinterest, in case you haven’t heard of it (aka you live in a box) is….well, you’ve heard of it. It has been gaining in popularity for the past year, but has exploded in the past six months. (I like to think the explosion coincided with my joining it at about that time….which, clearly, is no coincidence. Ahem.)

But I’m not telling you about Pinterest. I’m telling you about the newest Pinner. The coolest Pinner. The Pinner we all refer to as “Mr. President”

Yes, that’s right. President Obama has a Pinterest account.

Just started on Tuesday, I read about it that very on the Obama blog (yes, I subscribe and read Obama’s blog) and then yesterday it was on Jezebel. The president on crafts, DIY, and cooking? You better believe I started following him stat.

More random articles I’ve read:

Chocolate makes you thinner! Pass me the M&Ms, thanks.

Can’t decide between tea or coffee? Have them both! At the same time!

All those excuses you have for not gardening? Boloney, says Eatocracy.

It’s not all about the ADD-micro-internet-”blurp” style articles here though. I read books too.

I just got three new Kindle library loaners in as many days. I’ve got some reading to do.

Humorous chick lit won the coveted first slot. I’ve read three of Jen’s books already. She can do no wrong.

What have you been reading lately? Books? Good articles? Do you post political musings on facebook?
